The Fab 5: Do You Have Them?

"...because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me." Luke 11:6 (NIV)

Regardless of our schedules, we get together every 6-8 weeks.

Without fail.

All five of us.

The Fab 5.

That's what we call our band of five, dear friends, who have gone through wonder-filled joys and tough life situations together.

Devastating fire, divorce, family issues, adoption, Jesus encounters, faith struggles, career achievements, and much more.

The super glue or primacord of relationships.

We met when we landed in the same Bible Study Fellowship class three years ago. Let me tell you, studying Moses and the Pentateuch for nine months changes your life.

It brought ours together.

With Jesus at the center.

That class formed a bond between us so much so that we started doing things together outside of class. Now we make getting together regularly a priority.

We rotate around to each other's homes to share lunch on a Sunday afternoon, exchange a $10 gift around the theme set by the hostess, and catch up on life. (Yes, a theme is important because we get to decorate and make theme-related goodies to enjoy together! It's a girl thing...)

That's us above (L to R): Jennie, Lindsey, me, Bre, and Annie (and yes, those are red feather birds in our hair).

All of us marvel at how God knit our hearts together so quickly and solidly. We've been through heartbreaks and tremendous joys together.

I hope you have a Fab 5. A group of friends that, no matter what, will show up on your doorstep at a moment's notice to help or celebrate.

Pray for you when life knocks the wind out of you.

Encourage you when discouragement seeps in.

Squeal with you like a girl when joy cannot be contained.

Have conversations about nothing that mean everything.

I thank God for these incredible women and our friendship. They are such sweet reflections of Jesus.

And His great love.

Let's chat: Do you have a Fab 5? Who are they? How did you meet? What keeps you together?

  2. Donna ... I do not have that "fab 5" living here. I have about five close friends, but with military/civil service, we have moved so often ... and I have one in each city I lived in. What I wouldn't give to have them all here together ... to meet each other ... and to laugh with all of them together. Now, that's a thought! Grin. (sounds like the ultimate 50th birthday party!) Though one is all the way up in Washington state! But one day ... in heaven ... what a reunion that will be. Love you! You are blessed.

    1. Shelli, you are so blessed to have those friends! It's hard when distance separates and time interferes. Thanks for sharing that. Love you!

  3. I've definitely got a fab four - two of us new each other in college. We met the other two while living in a small town in NW Iowa. We've all since moved away from that little town, but we love getting together. What I wouldn't give to talk them all into moving to my town. :)

    1. Thanks, Jill! Wow, coffee AND friends. You just can't beat that with three shoes. I agree, and am so thankful Twitter is truly "social"! Blessings.

  5. Ah, the surpassing value of girlfriends. Like Shelli, my circle of friends has been affected by military life -- and moves. So I have friends all over the world. Even so, I have that inner circle, the ones on speed dial, no matter how long it's been since I've last seen them. And God has graciously provided at least one close friend -- maybe two, maybe five -- every place we've lived. I've prayed my daughters will discover their own precious girlfriends too.

    1. So true, Beth, so true! Their value is truly surpassed. Even though you've moved around, I see your tenacity to keep those bonds of friendship close to your heart. If your daughter has observed that in your life, chances are she'll do exactly the same. What a blessing!

  6. I don't have 5, but I have a couple really close, good friends. And my BFF lives 1,500 miles away, but we are still there for each other and just as close as ever. And you are right, they keep me afloat. {love your bird feathers, by the way!}
